Mallets Bay Race Track

Mallets Bay Race Track was a 1/5 mile dirt track that operated from 1950 until at least the early 1960’s. It was located in Colchester, about 10 minutes from Burlington, and was right next to a drive-in theatre. The land lay dormant for years until a developer bought both the track land and the drive-in and created a housing development. Though drive-ins are actually still plentiful in this area, short tracks are not, and it’s unfortunate that this one no longer exists, given its close proximity to Vermont’s largest city.

The housing development is interesting in that it is set up around an oval road. At first it seemed like they may have actually used the old track as a guide to build the neighborhood around but upon closer inspection the circle is set too close to the road and also measures out at more than 1/5 of a mile. The back straight more than likely runs through what are now the backyards of the houses that are farthest away from the road.
